This database is intended to contain all the families in the area of Leechburg, Pennsylvania: the old Armstrong County township of Allegheny (now Gilpin, Bethel, and Parks) and the Allegheny Township of Westmoreland County, including Hyde Park and West Leechburg. It is my intention to publish these data in the form of a German "ortssippenbuch." Copies of this paper document and the database in computer format will both be given to the local history societies.

The primary source of information is the US censuses (1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930, and 1940). Where it can be determined, by alternate sources, the relationships between those families are also shown. The alternate sources include church records, local newspaper and other publications, and published family trees. The source of the family data is documented so the information can be confirmed by anyone that desires to do so. The status of the data transcription is shown in the table below.

Since prior to about 1900 there was little effort to have correct spelling of anything, the names, both given name and surname, in the early censuses have great variations. Some have only a passing resemblance to the actual names. Some surnames actually did change over the years for various reasons. In order for the genealogy database merge engines to determine family connections, where known, the names have been changed to the more modern form as used in the 1920-1930 era and sometimes the 2002 Leechburg telephone directory. The earlier version of the names have not always been maintained as an AKA, but can be seen by viewing the referenced pages. Because of these many name variations, a special merge engine is under work to compare families by given name and approximate birth year to insure that the same family is identified throughout the years.

If you would like to add families in adjacent townships and communities (i.e., Burrell Twp, Kiskiminetas Twp, Apollo, and Freeport) please contact me for my tools, techniques, and standards. Since I control the updating of the information at the RootsWeb WorldConnect website, no data will be added that I do not feel contains the approriate format and documentation.
